Financial Client – Gym

This financial company provides a gym for their employees — a much appreciated perk, but its basement level meant that light was imperative to keep it from feeling gloomy. But even with proper lighting, a basement can still feel cut off from the outside world. To create a space that felt connected to its New York environment, Nanometer partnered with Gensler and Dot Dash to turn the ceiling into a programmable LED display inspired by the city itself.

These glass and metal ceiling panels were inspired by the sidewalk vaults found throughout New York, historically used to allow light into subterranean areas. In a modern take, these panels, designed with the same circular pattern, feature Nanometer’s NanoFleck programmable RGBW LEDs. During the day and regular use, the LEDs on the NanoFleck panels are programmed with subtle color shifts that mimic transitions of daylight and the flickering motion of people walking above, just as you might see under one of the vaults.

But the ceiling can do much more. Their Pixel Controls mean the NanoFleck fixtures can be programmed to display any number of colors and animations for special events that compliment decorative lighting and transform the mood of the space into something special.

One of the most popular settings is this saturated blue with deep violet highlights. The color is vibrant and versatile, and it also captures the luminous quality of New York City at night.

To achieve these seamless color transitions and animations, Nanometer implemented the full range of controls from the Pixel Controls programming to the power and data boxes. They were able to fine-tune the lighting so that the depth and character of the glass in the panels was never lost or overwhelmed, celebrating the craftsmanship of the material that has allowed light into the most unexpected places for centuries.
