Devon Energy Center

The Devon Tower stands as the tallest building in Oklahoma at 844 feet and 50 stories, and has quickly become a beloved focal point throughout the area, whether locals and visitors alike are admiring it from the ground, or enjoying the views from the aptly named Vast restaurant on the top floors. The tower is visible from far off, its glass exterior and triangular crown elements reflecting the sun and sky during the day.

But it’s at night when the Devon Tower really shines — thanks to some very large-scale lighting design by Jack Bailey and NanoFleck and NanoLine fixtures all programmed via NanoControls’ Dynamic Lighting Rack. Nanometer also supplied floodlights manufactured by ColorKinetics.

All together, this large-scale project features 197,052 channels across 49,263 pixels of RGBW pixel control, programmed to work in harmony and light up the Oklahoma City skyline.

The Crown

The three-sided building culminates in three triangular lanterns at the top that measure 75 feet in height and 85 feet at their widest point, and span eight levels of the building.

Behind the glass of each triangle are 83 custom-built 4’5” x 9’4” panels housing 11,939 NanoFleck dots and 47,756 channels of RGBW LEDs — or 35,817 NanoFleck dots across all three.

These allow the crown the ability to display any color or color combination, but also play high-resolution video that can be seen from afar thanks to the use of VLCs. What’s more, all of the NanoFleck fixtures are mounted on the interior of the building, behind the glass. This arrangement makes maintaining the fixtures much easier. Fixtures can be accessed from inside the building, which is safer and easier for everyone, and allows for quicker turnaround on repairs and maintenance.

With these high-resolution video capabilities, the Devon Tower can celebrate anything with the people of Oklahoma City: events, holidays, and of course the OKC Thunder. In fact, the tower plays the team logo surrounded by lightning for every home game.

In addition to the animations and colors, each lantern uses 18 dual-lensed Reach Elite floodlights manufactured by ColorKinectics.

The Spines

Along the building’s three vertices and spanning 48 of the 50 floors are also a series of NanoLine Original fixtures: each floor’s array consists of about 24 RGBW LED fixtures, with 8 fixtures per side. Like the crown, the NanoLine fixtures are mounted inside building, making maintenance and repairs significantly safer and easier.

Programmed with Pixel Controls, the NanoLine fixtures can play animations and color shifts that correspond to the crown’s programming.
