Accenture wanted their New York office to serve as a place of innovation and collaboration. Described as “Part case study, part living lab,” they wanted their space, which spans some nine floors in 1 Manhattan West, to be a living representation of tech evolution and an inspiring environment for Accenture employees. The space combines communal and individual workspaces, gathering hubs, and plenty of natural light, open space, and green accents. It also includes a fully equipped broadcast studio, coffee stations, and demo areas showcasing Accenture’s latest developments.

In this open community space, Accenture wanted an animated ceiling as a striking centerpiece.

They had previously been looking at a different product for the animated ceiling, but the power and data logistics were rapidly becoming too complex to be realistic. Things got simplified when Nanometer was able to package a suite of products and create exactly what they were looking for, thanks to Nanometer’s ability to integrate with other brands.

Nanometer implemented a long run of panels to create a video ceiling with a series of ambient visualizations designed to soothe and inspire. The request was for 4” on-center pixels, so Nanometer created fully custom substrates, painted black for extra contrast, to maintain that spacing and built out the power and distribution racks specifically for the space.

The individually programmable LED points create any animation, from atmospheric shifts to text. When the PVC membrane diffuser is added, the effect becomes soft and cloudlike.

The animations were selected from Nanometer’s stock content for the controller as a showcase of the system’s capabilities with subtly colorful, fluid effects. At the same time, the effects are calming and unobtrusive so as not to distract in a work environment.

Accenture’s office took inspiration taken from the city itself, seen in the metal and brick elements, that reflect the local architecture, and in the neon lighting elements inspired by the subway maps. The dynamic ceiling is toned-down nod to the animated billboards seen in Times Square, bringing the dynamism of the city into the workspace and adapting it to be an uplifting element for employees.
